Unfortunately, until I get back to Atlanta next Friday, I don't really have much extra drawing time. I do, however, have some sketches that I've done for my creator-owned project "Fang", a comic I'm drawing for who knows how long it'll take. Here, then, are a few character studies of Fang, practicing his swordplay. I referenced these from a chinese sword fighting book. The last pic is just a crop from the one of the pages, turned sideways. I had fun drawing these, and will incorporate some of them into the book.

Sun Wukong ,the Monkey King, is perhaps the most famous and beloved fictional character in all of classical Chinese literature and the main character in Journey to the West. A magician, priest, ruler, sage, and warrior in the shape of a monkey, he is the mischievous protagonist of Journey to the West, based on popular tales dating back to the Tang dynasty. The novel narrates his adventures from birth, in particular how he accompanied the monk Xuanzang, also known as Sanzang or Tangseng, to retrieve Buddhist sutras from India. Some scholars believe he is based upon the legend of Hanuman, the Indian monkey hero from the ancient Ramayana epic.

Since it is a new week I wanted to finally post up a topic. Mine is MARTIAL ARTS! Yeah! Let's draw an image of anything relating to the martial arts. You can draw Bruce Lee, Jim Kelly, your son with his white belt . . . go crazy! I did this sketch of my Capoeira Angola group playing in a roda (ho-dah). Capoeira is and African martial art with roots in Angola which developed in Brazil. So your art form can be from anywhere not just what you see on tv. There are so many forms. If you want to try something different research some and share the history with us!

Saturday Morning growing up was the one day I really looked forward to every-week. I'd get up to watch cartoons so early my moms would come downstairs and tell me to take my ass back to bed. Id get out my notebook paper and would draw the cartoons while it was on. Thats how i really got into the whole animation thing. Until this day if I'm watching cartoons I'd draw sketches of them while the show is playing. Well Woody woodpecker was my favorite of all times. Not the more common seen version but the crazy cross eyed version. I hated when they changed Woody Woodpecker! Damn you damn you all for changing Woody to that watered down version. Woody Woodpecker was a brash, high-strung woodpecker whose trademark was his staccato laugh, "ha-ha-ha-HA-ha". The character first appeared in the 1940 Andy Panda short, Knock Knock, voiced by Mel Blanc.

The first comic book i ever picked up was Spider-man. I don't remember which issue. I'M NOT THAT BIG OF A NERD! i just remember marvel use to reprint alot of the older spider-man comics and i would always get them form the drug store in my small town. I think they were 50 or 60 cent back then. I really got into spider-man, the cartoon the comics and the toys. Oh man the toys. I remember my mom bought me this spider-man toy that had a light that shined his logo on your wall. He didn't move much but i loved that thing. I'd jump all over the house thinking i was spider-man and whenever anyone came near me my spider sense would tingle and i 'd jump somewhere else. trying to climb walls was the best. lol man those where the good old days.

I did this real quick at lunch today. I had to add my childhood memory. This is when my brother and I got locked in the bathroom at the Acme market in Philly in the mid 70's. This old crappy bathroom was in the back room for employees only. It was before supermarkets had those fancy public bathrooms. It was either the end of the day or a sick twisted joke that didn't have me laughin! That's me sitting in the urinal with the bo-bo's on my feet. Hey, my mom could buy four pairs for all of my brothers as opposed to chuck tailors for one child. Can't blame her.

We eventually got out. It seemed like forever but it was probably only a few minutes. I don't remember. If it was any longer I would have been searching around for food. LOL!

I been out of it the last few days. Haven't been able to draw anything that looks good. I was surfing the net and came across this photo and thought i'd do a quick sketch of it and try and get out this rut I've been in the last few days. So i pull out the wacom pen and draw and draw and draw until i got this.

So, I was about 4 or 5. It was a bright, sunny day. Coney Island. Brooklyn, NY. Middle of the summer. 1977, or 1978. I was either coming or going to the beach, I don't know which. I was also wearing my favorite Hulk t-shirt. Which, of course, I know now, cause I have the photo somewhere. I was walking down the street with my Mom, happy as a 4 or 5 year old kid could be. We turned the corner, and there he was. The Nathan's Hot Dog Man. "Mommy! Nathan's Hot Dog Man!", I screamed. "Want a picture?" she asked me. Was this lady crazy? What was she thinking? Of course I did! It was the Nathan's Hot Dog Man! So, squinty eyed because of the summer sun, and smiling as hard as I could, I got my picture with him. And then he gave me a balloon, and we went on our way. Happy days.

I'm gonna do something new but i found this in my stack of old stuff! I did this about 10 years ago right out of high school. Its back when i was always getting in trouble for drawing instead of doing my work in class. My mom tells everyone this story when she meets you for the first time. She use to say i learned how to draw before i learned to write my own name and that i drew pictures of Smurfs instead of my name on all my homework papers. I don't remember donig ti but i do remember getting sent to the office for drawing. lol!

For this weeks sketch I've posted a memory from Junior Highschool. I'm the one on the right. The big guy is Billy Monohan. He was the only kid in school who had facial hair. I don't remember what started the fight (if you can call it a fight) but I almost got my ass kicked because I stood up to this juvenile monster during gym class. I remember it like it was yesterday (cue flashback music and wavy ripples). He cornered me in the locker room after class and all I could do was continue to stand up to him and defend myself. His man boobs rendered my punches useless. He raised his hand to retaliate and the gym teacher, Mr. Land grabbed him from behind and subdued him, just before he punched my face off and left me in a puddle of my own filth. Rumor was he was expelled for punching the principal in the face. I never saw him after that.
