Reinvent a cartoon character from your childhood.

This weekend on my way home from comic con my flight was held up for about 5 hours during which time I hashed out this marker sketch of Mum Ra. Thundercats was my favorite show back in the day and I used to love the transitional sequence when Mum Ra would transform from this dried out old husk into this buff zombie villain. I tried to re visualize him from memory without trying to be too accurate so as to reinvent his look. Which brings me to a new sketch jam. We haven't had one in a looong time so it would really be good to see everyone get involved on this one. So here it is: Reinvent a cartoon character from your childhood!

SBAS meeting at San Diego Comic Con

Last week I went out to San Diego for Comic Con. Dawud (3rd from the left) and I met up with Mr. Ken Lashley (2nd from the left) who flew down from Toronto. The gentleman on the far right is an artist by the name of JD Smith who I had just met moments before this photo was taken and a good friend of Dawud's. And yes that handsome devil on the left is yours truly. For those of you who haven't been to Sd for Comic Con, do yourselves a favor and make it a priority.

New Brotherman Art - Duke Denim

I am working on a variety of new pieces which is why I have not been posting lately . . . well that's one reason. This is an image I did about two weeks ago with some color assistance by my main man Brian McGee. You all know he got the skills! I am working on character ilustrations of all the main characters and will release them some time soon. Not posting a time table.

Studying The Masters

This is a ink drawing I did with a Micron pen - I am currently studying Picasso, Sergio Toppi and a young Jedi master named John Mahoney. For the past several months I have been vigerously striving to improve my drawing abillity as well as aquire tons of new styles. This drawing was done from a live model. Drawing with pens is a trip - you are force to make desicions and live with them as John puts it. I will be posting more ink drawings soon.
I met John Mahoney at Gnomon Visual Effects School in hollywood and loved his teaching methods. He is the only teacher I have ever had that helped me have a non-stop growing trend in my work. He has an awsome DVD that blows other instrutional drawing DVDs right out of the water in my opinion. Here is a link to his work:

Winter Hunt

Sorry for being a blog hog with 2 consecutive posts but time permits and I gotta take advantage.
Here's a value rendering of a personal piece that I'm currently involved in. I consciously tried to compose it according to the method used in Baroque and other classical painting traditions which make it a point to lead the viewer's eye around the image. Once I've finished obsessing about the composition and value, I'll begin obsessing about the color and detail. I'll post further progress.

Sumi-rai Jack

Sorry for not posting in so long. It's Firefox's fault. I had to switch back to Safari just to get this up. Anyway a little 'splaining is in order here. I'm researching Japanese Sumi brush techniques and calligraphy for a series of stylized prints that Im doing for the office space I work in. This is a Photoshop comp of what I'd like to do by hand.
