Confused Minds fan art
Stacy and Mike are the main characters from the comic by Ken Patterson called Confused Minds. It's fun to draw other's people's stuff and interpret it into my style. He quite liked it.
Enjoy. :)
With the help of some friends, I have compiled a roster of talented artists to contribute to a weekly sketch jam by invitation only. Every week or so we will settle on an idea and will each take a stab at illustrating the concept. The level of completion can be anything from a rough sketch to a finished rendering. This blog is intended, for those who are involved, to be an opportunity to challenge one another, to challenge ourselves, and to connect with our contemporaries in the field.

This is yet another good beginning. The swirls at the bottom are bangin' daughter'-lol (get it - Wu Tang and them - "bangin son'" alright alright)
Do you spin your paper?
If not try turning the paper as you do round shapes. Even with other types of shapes - it will help your curves look more mechanically rounded - as if you used french curves. Spinning the paper is a freehand technique that saves alot of time and helps things look a bit more accurate. The main idea is that you want your forearm to remain in a 45 degree angle (you most comfortable drawing position) at all times. Thus when you need to hit a curve or vertical you turn the page or pad a notch or two leaving your arm in the same position it was in originally and finish the curve, vertical etc.
Also try sketching with different types of pencils - I recently found that "Prismacolor Col-Erase" (a color pencil with an eraser on the top) (I never use the ereaser - I just like the way the lead glides on the page) and "Prismacolor Verithin" (Verithin is a harder version of color pencil) give a different feel when I sketch characters. I don't even use regular lead much anymore - the contrast is too extreme in the beginning stages and 2h -hb - just too hard.

Thanks for the tips.
Usually I used mechanical pencils to draw, but this day I had forgotten them. So I just used one of those yellow #2 pencils that my mom had in her classroom. I hadn't used one of those to draw in forever, but it worked out ok.
